Join Elaina M. Ellis and Sossity Chiricuzio for a gentle, interactive,
dynamic writing experience.
This workshop will focus on writing as a tool to explore and transform
body image. In the journey toward self-love, writing can act as mirror,
medicine bag, and lifeline. For those of us who have struggled with
shame around our own bodies (who hasn't?), writing can be a method of
reinvention, to tell new stories about where we've been and to imagine
where we're going. As taboo as it is to reveal our struggles, it is
perhaps even more risky to reveal the moments when we appreciate and
celebrate our bodies. Through reading, facilitated discussion, and
writing exercises, participants in the workshop will explore an honest
spectrum, from body shame to BodyLove.
This is workshop #2 in a four-part series. Subsequent gatherings will
be held on the third Sunday evening of each month, on the following
themes:
SEPT 19th: Dirty & Queer (Crafting Erotic Poems & Stories)
OCT 17th: Page to Stage (Performance Workshop for Poets &
Storytellers)
*About the facilitators:*
*Elaina M. Ellis* is a full-time teaching artist, performer, producer,
and poet, based in Seattle. Elaina received her teacher training at
Bent Writing Institute (the nation’s only school of its kind, for queer
writers), and uses Bent’s approach to “redefining criticism,” because
she has seen it change -- and save -- lives. She is the founder of
TumbleMe Productions, a dynamic site for collaborations in spoken word
and other art-forms. Elaina is pursuing her MFA in Creative Writing at
Antioch University, and her first fancy book of poetry will be released
by Write Bloody Publishing in Spring 2011. She writes to worship, to
recover, to seduce, to fight back, to play, to confess, and to make
messes.

A reading group for science fiction/fantasy works with themes and characters that provoke discussions about the concepts of gender and sexuality. The sci-fi/fantasy genre allows us to intimately experience worlds in which the rules/laws of our own world can be cast aside and different structures, (biological, technological, psychological, sociological, etc.) can be explored. Our intention is to read books that fall into the general category of science fiction or fantasy, expanding our selections as the group sees fit. Authors such as Octavia Butler, Ursula LeGuin, and James Tiptree are examples, but there are no set limitations on who we will read. The books we choose to read may leave us feeling positive and affirmed, but they may also leave us depressed or angry, hopefully they will always be thought-provoking, stimulating and challenging.
My Sweet Wild Dance has been described as “soul-refreshment of the highest order’ in Edge Magazine, and has just won a Golden Crown Literary Award. This autobiographical book is about daring to be different. The author’s journey takes us from the impoverished aristocracy of post-war Scotland, through experiments with drugs, free love, and anti- establishment politics, to adventurous travels all over the world. Always on the cutting edge, she was active around environmental issues decades before the mainstream. Disillusioned by the sexism in Britain, she turned to Nature for solace, moving to rural California, where she engaged in healing work around her sexuality, worked as a Jill-of-all-trades, ran an organic farm, and came out as a lesbian. At the age of fifty, a series of inexplicable experiences led her to take up a life of kitesurfing, and she became the woman who follows the wind.
Mikaya Heart knows how to dance her own sweet, wild dance, and she offers us a compelling picture of the agony and ecstasy that are the rewards of choosing one’s personal truth. The path she has forged through the jungle of life is an inspiration—and a delightful read Mikaya Heart (www.mikayaheart.org) is the author of books on lesbianism, shamanism, and orgasm, as well as a number of articles. Ms Heart grew up in Scotland and now lives in Northern California when she is not traveling the world having adventures. She has been featured on many radio shows, including the Marc Bernier Show, the Big Morning Show, the Takeaway, and the Lionel Show.
The Feminist Film Society is a group of folks who watch a variety of movies and discuss them with feminism in mind. The screening starts at 7:00 with discussion to follow.
The Road Through Wonderland is Schiller’s autobiographical account of her volatile years
with John Holmes-Porn King. Her story was first seen in the 2003 movie Wonderland,
starring Val Kilmer and Kate Bosworth. Schiller paints a realistic picture of a dangerous
Hollywood subculture fighting the hangover of overindulgence in a decade that condoned
overconsumption to the point of madness.
Brief Bio of Author:
Dawn Schiller was fifteen years old in 1976, when she met thirty-two-year-old porn star John
Holmes. Holmes courted Dawn, had sex with her, and manipulated her with drugs and alcohol.
Holmes physically and emotionally abused Dawn for several years. After the famed Wonderland
murders in 1981, they fled to Florida, where she ultimately broke free and turned him over to the
police.
Dawn eventually relocated to northern California and finally to the Pacific Northwest, where
she now lives with her daughter. In addition to being a devoted mother, Dawn has worked as an
associate producer and consultant on the movie Wonderland (she was portrayed by actress Kate
Bosworth; John Holmes was played by Val Kilmer).
Dawn is adamant about relating her story with the hope that any other young teens won’t fall into
the same hell that she did. She has developed a national presentation titled “Our Throwaway
Teens—Who Are They and How Can We Help?” to raise awareness of the vulnerabilities of
teens growing up in abusive and neglectful environments. Dawn educates audiences about
what a teen might be experiencing internally when targeted and groomed by a predator, how
to identify a young victim in trouble, pedophile seduction techniques, and the use of drugs to
manipulate and trap a victim. She gives an inside view of what it’s like to be a “throwaway
teen” and how we, as a community, can help. Dawn is also excited to announce E.S.T.E.A.M.,
Empowering Successful Teens through Education, Awareness & Mentoring, a newly registered
nonprofit dedicated to assisting teens who are struggling to find a safe and successful path to
adulthood.
Today, Dawn works full time at a university in the arts and science department, is on the
committee to revise the university’s sexual harassment policy, and is a member of the President’s
Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW).
