Flight of the Hummingbird: A Parable for the Environment Flight of the Hummingbird: A Parable for the Environment
by Yahgulanaas, Michael Nicoll, Maathai, Wangari, Dalai Lama
Hummingbirds have long been a symbol of wisdom and courage. In this charming story, a hummingbird makes a valiant effort to put out a raging fire that threatens her forest home -- trip after trip, her beak is filled each time with just a drop of water. Her efforts show her woodland companions that doing something -- anything -- is better than doing nothing at all. The hummingbird parable, which originates with the Quechuan people of South America, has become a talisman for environmentalists and activists worldwide committed to making meaningful change. This retelling, enlivened by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas' fabulous Haida-manga illustrations, is suitable for all ages of would-be activists. Although environmental responsibility often seems like an overwhelming task, "The Flight of the Hummingbird" shows how easy it is to start and how great the effect could be if everyone just did what they could.

Animal Dreams Animal Dreams
by Kingsolver, Barbara
"Animals dream about the things they do in the day time just like people do. If you want sweet dreams, you've got to live a sweet life." So says Loyd Peregrina, a handsome Apache trainman and latter-day philosopher. But when Codi Noline returns to her hometown, Loyd's advice is painfully out of her reach. Dreamless and at the end of her rope, Codi comes back to Grace, Arizona to confront her past and face her ailing, distant father. What the finds is a town threatened by a silent environmental catastrophe, some startling clues to her own identity, and a man whose view of the world could change the course of her life. Blending flashbacks, dreams, and Native American legends, "Animal Dreams" is a suspenseful love story and a moving exploration of life's largest commitments. With this work, the acclaimed author of "The Bean Trees" and "Homeland and Other Stories" sustains her familiar voice while giving readers her most remarkable book yet.

Iodine Iodine
by Kimmel, Haven
Trace -- or Ianthe, depending on her level of clarity -- is a brilliant college senior with a very troubling past. It begins to manifest itself as she takes on the assignment of writing a 'dream journal' for one of her classes. I could not put this book down! Is our damaged heroine descending into madness, or clawing her way out of it?--Piper Richmond, Inklings Bookshop (Yakima, WA)

Gail’s journey took her around the globe where she encountered a longing to retrieve sacred female wisdom among women everywhere. Her poetic and heartfelt store is for anyone who has ever struggled to build and sustain an interior life in our driven and fast-paced society – and for mothers and daughters everywhere.
